Cornell Cooperative Extension Invites You to Join Us for National Seed Swap Day

Local events and Master Gardener groups are happening across the country where gardeners trade seeds, share tips, and prepare for spring planting.   National Seed Swap Day is celebrated on the last Saturday in January to honor the tradition of swapping seeds with neighbors. The final week of January and the chilly winds of winter hold the promise of putting winter to rest and signals the coming of spring. Seed swaps are a great way to obtain new seeds, share your favorite seeds, and attend a fun and FREE event!

This year, CCE Cattaraugus Master Gardeners are hosting a free seed swap at our office on Saturday January 31st, with participation encouraged for bringing labeled seeds, though it's not required to join the fun!  We will be demonstrating how to be a more plastic free gardener and learning how to make seed pots and seed packets. We are also celebrating our Master Gardener Volunteers who have accrued 50 or more hours volunteering in our communities!

  1. Bring Seeds:

Gathered seeds from your garden, leftover packets, or bulbs to swap, but you can also attend empty-handed to receive free seeds.

  1. Label Your Seeds:

If you bring seeds, label them with the plant name, year harvested, and any other relevant information.

  1. Learn and Connect:

Meet other gardeners, exchange ideas, learn plastic free gardening tips, and get advice on seed starting and saving.
